Power BI Server Subscriptions E-Mail problems when users enter a comment

I'm on Power BI Report Server Version1.18.8702.6380(September 2023)

When a user with the Manage individual subscriptions privilege creates an email subscription, and enters text in the the Comment section, they get the error below.

An error has occurred.

A delivery error has occurred.

The message in the error logs is;

|ERROR|1362|OData exception occurred: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: A delivery error has occurred. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.DeliveryErrorException: A delivery error has occurred. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.InvalidExtensionParameter: One of the extension parameters is not valid for the following reason: You do not have permission to modify the value for "Comment".

When the comment is removed, the user is allowed to save the subscription and it runs as expected. Users with the Manage all subscriptions privilege can use the Comments the section without error. I've instructed our users not use the section to work around this problem, but since they see it, they want to use it. Is this a bug or some kind or a setup issue? I can't find anywhere to enable or disable the Comment section.

Hi @TomD ,

The error message suggests a permissions issue with modifying the "Comment" section. Ensure that users with "Manage individual subscriptions" privileges have the necessary permissions to add comments. This might involve reviewing the role definitions and permissions in Power BI Report Server to ensure they align with your organization's policies.

There isn’t a direct setting to enable or disable the Comment section for subscriptions in Power BI Report Server.

Hello @Anonymous ,

Thanks for your reply. I have verified that users have the Manage individual subscriptions privilege and can create subscriptions. The problem is they can't enter text into the comments section of the subscription and I can't find any way to exclude or include the comments section from that privilege. The documentation seems to suggest that if you have the Manage individual subscriptions privilege, you should be able to use the comments section.

Hi @TomD ,

It appears that users with the “Manage Individual subscriptions” privilege encounter difficulties when trying to create email subscriptions for reports, specifically with the CC/BCC and Comments sections missing. Similarly, in Power BI Report Server, users with the “Manage individual subscriptions” privilege may encounter errors when entering text in the Comment section of an email subscription

Unfortunately, it seems that the comments section is only available when users have the higher role level of “manage all subscriptions,” such as the Content Manager role. If you need to enable the comments section while keeping the role level low (i.e., Manage Individual subscriptions only), you might need to explore alternative approaches or consider adjusting the permissions.

Hello @Anonymous ,

Thank you for confirming that. The problem really is then that the people with “Manage individual subscriptions” privilege see the comments section, when it should be hidden like CC/BCC sections.

Hi @TomD ,

It is odd , and you can try to update your Power BI Report Server Version to the latest.

Hello @Anonymous ,

I updated our test server to Version1.20.8910.25479(May 2024) and the problem still exists.

Here is what users see that only have the Manage individual subscriptions privilege.

Here is the error that happens when a user with the Manage individual subscriptions privilege tries to enter text into the Comment section.
