Hi All,
Our company has procured PowerBI Premium (P1) and would like to install PowerBI reporting server, do we need to pay for a SQL licence to acheive this installation? As SQL database is a pre-requisite of PowerBI Reporting Server how could the power BI reporting server be considered included in premium pricing if you still have to pay for a SQL license (where you don't need it for anything else)?
Ta, ankit885
Power BI Premium is a capacity based licensing model that you subscribe to.
When you subscribe to Power BI Premium, you get a fixed amount of dedicated Power BI capacity in the cloud and the same amount of core based licenses to deploy Power BI Report Server on-premises.
So if you purchase 8 cores of Power BI Premium capacity, you can also gain the rights to license 8 cores on-premises for Power BI Report Server.
And that 8 cores don’t have to be on one server. You could deploy PBI RS on two separate 4 core servers and scale out your Power BI Report Server solution. So it doesn’t have to be on one single server.
Hi @Anonymous
Thank you for taking time to reply. Unfortunately the licensing model from a capacity perpective is quite clear. It is the SQL server requirements for the PowerBI Report Server when you license it through Premium that is not.
