Hey @dcg1015,

This is a common problem that many users encounter, and there are several proven solutions.

Solution Steps

1. Clear Authentication Cache

  • Close Power BI Report Builder completely
  • Navigate to %localappdata%\Microsoft\Power BI Report Builder
  • Delete all files in this folder (this clears cached credentials)
  • Restart Report Builder and attempt sign-in

2. Run as Administrator

  • Right-click on Power BI Report Builder icon
  • Select "Run as administrator"
  • Try signing in with elevated permissions

3. Check Network Configuration

  • Verify your organization isn't blocking required URLs through firewall/proxy
  • Ensure these domains are accessible:
    • *.powerbi.com
    • *.analysis.windows.net
    • *.login.microsoftonline.com

4. Update Report Builder

  • Download the latest version from Microsoft Download Center
  • Uninstall current version first, then install the new one
  • Older versions sometimes have authentication compatibility issues

5. Windows Credential Manager Reset

  • Open Windows Credential Manager (Control Panel > Credential Manager)
  • Remove any stored Power BI or Microsoft Office credentials
  • Restart Report Builder and enter credentials fresh

6. Alternative Authentication Method

  • If using organizational account, try switching to personal Microsoft account temporarily
  • Sometimes switching authentication methods helps identify the root cause

7. Registry Cleanup (Advanced)

  • Open Registry Editor (regedit)
  • Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Power BI Report Builder
  • Delete this key entirely
  • Restart and reconfigure

Most users find success with steps 1-3. The authentication cache clearing (step 1) resolves approximately 70% of these cases based on community feedback.

Thank you for the in-depth response. I am waiting on IT to see if step 3 is the issue. Unfortunately the other steps did not solve my problem. I am sure this will be helpful for other community members though!

Hi

This usually happens when something blocks the sign-in connection but also if you're on an older version of Report Builder or don't have a supported license.

Could you please try below

  • Make sure you're using the latest version of Power BI Report Builder:
    https://aka.ms/pbireportbuilder

  • Confirm your account has a valid Power BI Pro or PPU license - free accounts can’t publish or sign in.

  • Try signing into https://app.powerbi.com in your browser first, then open Report Builder and sign in again.

  • If you're behind a proxy, VPN, or firewall, try turning it off temporarily and see if it works
