We developed a pbix report in Nov-2024 version of Power BI Desktop. Now we need to move it to client's Power BI Report Server which is of May 2024 version.
We do not have access to the Report Server. A colleague with access to Report Server is able to upload a dummy file with data source in his local folder. While our report's data source is SharePoint folder but since it is just moving the pbix to Report Server - we're trying to just move the pbix there. Attached is the image of error and error logs he gets:

Hi,mitapate .Thank you for your reply.
In fact, I think the main reason for your problem is that there is a big mismatch between the version of Power BI Desktop (RS version) and the version of Power BI Report Server Web Protal the user is using.
Please try to save the pbix file as the May 2024 version before publishing it to the client report server (it may be a problem to open and save the high version file with a low version of software.)
If you can save the pbix file successfully, please upload the May version of the pbix file to Web Protal, which is also the May version.

If the above way will be an error because pbix can not save as a lower version of the file. You need to update your client's Power bi Report Server (in line with the Desktop version), and take care to save important report files to avoid incompatible file versions.
Generally speaking, the official version download link will only be saved for the last one year, so you need to update the version according to the actual situation, and save some historical version download files (if necessary, you need to restore the version).

Thanks for your reply . I tried the same approach of making the version compatible but it is still giving the same issue hence leads me to thinking if the Many-to-many relationship between tables is causing the error or the data source permissions.
Thanks !
Hi,@mitapate .Thank you for your reply.
If you are thinking about data source connectivity issues and the pbix file data source you are currently experiencing issues with is indeed Sharepoint folder. hopefully my tests and documentation below will help you.
You can try creating the pbix file using another data source (different from SharePoint folder) to test if the same issue occurs.
select save as > Power BI Report Server
When I click upload on the web portal it uploads fine.
However, it should be noted that if you need to refresh the data using sharepoint as the data source on Power BI Report Server, this is not supported at the moment, and you can only implement cached refresh, i.e., after refreshing the data in Desktop (RS vsersion), and then uploading the updated pbix file s to the Report Server again, you can only do this by uploading the updated pbix file s to the Report Server. to the Report Server.
Because Desktop connection sharepoint data source generally use Microsoft Account for authentication, and Power BI Report Server only supports Windows authentication, the better practice is to change the data source type, the sharepoint data source changed to the data source type supported by PBIRS.

The Report Server only supports Windows authentication
If there is any deviation in my understanding, please feel free to correct me and provide details (type of data source, validation method, whether I have right of access to the data source, etc.)
I look forward to your reply.
Hello,d_gosbell ,thanks for your concern about this issue.
Your answer is excellent!
And I would like to share some additional solutions below.
Hi,@mitapate . I am glad to help you.
It looks like you are having problems uploading pbix files to Power BI Report Server.
Here are my suggestions which I hope will be helpful to you
1. report server supports backward compatibility.
A .pbix file created by a newer version of Power BI Desktop may not open on an older version of Report Server. On the contrary, .pbix files created with older versions of Power BI Desktop can usually be opened on newer versions of Report Server.
Therefore, you need to ensure that the version of Desktop (RS version) and report server used to create the report are consistent (new features added in newer versions of Desktop are not available in older versions of Report Server Web Protal, resulting in file upload failures)
2. check whether Report Server can access the data source used by the pbix file (set the data source credentials for the report correctly in web protal)
3. you mentioned storage in SharePoint. does this mean that the data source used by the pbix file is a sharepoint folder (On- premises)
Or does it mean that you want to store a pbix file stored in a sharepoint folder in Report Server (the data source used by the report is another database).
In either case, make sure you have sufficient permissions to upload files on Report Server and that the data source credentials are set correctly (authentication way).

Hi Carson, thanks for your valuable suggestions made reg the issue.
Regarding the data source issue, I feel the same that the data source is in our org environment's SharePoint folder and while the Report Server is in client's organization. Could that be creating an issue that the Report Server is not able to access our environment's SharePoint ? What could be the possible solutions to it ?
Thanks in anticipation. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays in advance !!!
