Experiences with migrating from Power BI Service to Power BI Report Server?

Hello everyone,

We are facing a challenging task. We need to migrate a WebApp that is hosted on Azure and is embedding Power BI reports from the Power BI Service completely to an on-premises solution.

This means the following:

  • Currently, our WebApp is running with a React frontend and a Python Flask backend, hosted on Azure.
  • We use the "Embed for your organization" scenario for embedding.
  • The user accesses the app via an authentication service.
  • After authentication (not AD), the user is redirected to the backend with a username that is later applied to the Row-Level Security (RLS) in Power BI.
  • The backend serves the React frontend app.
  • The frontend calls a REST endpoint in the backend and receives an embed token for embedding the Power BI reports.
  • The frontend embeds the reports using the powerbi.embed function.

Does anyone have an experience report for this?

Hi, @schmitz82

You can start by understanding your current Power BI service configuration, including all reports, datasets, and embedding scenarios. Clarify the goals and scope of the migration and ensure that all stakeholders understand and support the migration plan. You can learn more from the following documents:

You might needto try exporting the report from the Power BI service as a pbix file, configure the appropriate data source on the Power BI Report Server, and make sure the data connection is working before uploading it to the Power BI Report Server.

Make the configuration.

Then there's testing and validation, testing everything in a local environment to make sure features like report embedding, row-level security (RLS), and user authentication are working properly. Evaluate the performance of your report server to ensure that it can handle the expected load. You can check the following link:
