Copying Power BI Dataset Use Case

Can someone provide some uses cases or why a developer would copy a dataset from  one workspace to another?

1. When a dataset is copied, is it duplicating the data or simply referenceing the original dataset?
2. How does the copied dataset impact the connection to a Power BI Dataset? For example, If I copied a dataset from workspace 1 into workspace 2 and in the Power BI Desktop would like to connect to the Power BI dataset, would it show 2 versions of it? One in workspace 1 and another in workspace 2?
   1. And would it would it matter which one I connected to?
