SQL Server Data Source Missing in Power Query for Excel on macOS

Hello everyone,

I'm using Power Query in Excel (v16.87) on macOS Sonoma (v14.5 - M1 Pro). According to this Microsoft article from February 2023, support for SQL Server data sources is announced and demonstrated. You can see the relevant image from the article below:

In my case, when I try to create a connection from Power Query, the SQL Server option is NOT available. I have checked with a couple of colleagues who have similar configurations, and they also do not see the SQL Server data source option. Here is what I see:

Does anyone have this option available or know if any special configuration is required to enable it?

I've found that the SQL Server source it's only available on the Beta channel of Excel at this time.

Hi @felipgil ,

In Excel (v16.87) on macOS, It is true that there is no SQL Server connection option in the interface you open, but there is an additional Connect to SQL Server ODBC Data Source at the bottom of the screen after clicking Get Data (Power Query), so you can try to connect using this option.

I'm sorry I'm on Windows and I can't provide more test screenshots, but there really isn't a setting that prevents you from connecting to SQL

Thank you very much!! for your response and information. I am aware of the option you mentioned to connect to SQL. However, I need to connect via Power Query to perform transformations on the data. From my tests, creating the connection through the existing (legacy) option connects via MS Query, but I couldn't find a way to use this connection from Power Query. According to the article I mentioned in my previous post, there should be an option to connect via Power Query, correct?

Additionally, when I connect using the option you mentioned through MS Query with NTLM authentication, I can only see the tables and not the views I need to query in the database. I can't understand why this is happening. It doesn't seem to be a permissions issue, as I can access the same database and see all the views using the same user on a Windows machine.

If you or anyone else in the community has any further comments, suggestions, or solutions for accessing SQL Server from Power Query in Excel for macOS, I would greatly appreciate it!
