Accidentally deleted PowerBI Service data connections and can't create new ones

I had PowerBI Desktop running successfully, with a Personal mode Gateway and PowerBI Service connecting to that gateway. Reports were scheduled (manually) on the service and generating reports with data coming through the gateway just fine.

I was troubleshooting another issue which lead me to delete my existing Data Connections (Settings\Manage connections and gateways\connections). Yeah, that was a stupid idea, since it resulted in a load of trouble. That collection of Data Connections is now empty and I cannot create new ones. The old onprem gateway is still visible if I select Settings\Manage connections\On-premises data gateways. It can go online. The gateway itself says it is "online and ready to be used". But if I go to the settings of my report I see this:
You can't schedule refresh for this semantic model because the following data sources currently don't support refresh

None of the reports have the settings to edit credentials to connect to the gateway. The "Gateway and cloud connections" node in settings for the report is missing. One of the reports still has that node but when I enable it and try to click the "Apply" button, I get this:

Something went wrong

Failed to use the selected gateway. Please make sure the gateway is up and running and try again.

I can no longer configure my reports on PowerBI service to use the gateway.

I really need help as this has totally blocked me

The solution ended up being this (not sure if all the steps described here are required, but definitely the step about generating and publishing the Test/CSV report)

1. Uninstalled powerbi desktop and gateway

2. Removed the gateway from "Manage Connections and Gateways" settings page

3. Reinstalled PowerBI Desktop and the gateway

4. Create a simple Text/CSV report using PowerBI Desktop. Save and publish to PowerBI Service

5. This will successfully create a Connection in PowerBI Service (to the powersonal mode on-prem gateway). IT IS THIS RECREATION OF THE CONNECTION TO THE GATEWAY THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY FAILING

6. From this point on, I can now publish the reports that use my custom connector and they will also get connections to the gateway (the same one that the Texy/CSV report is using

This would be a good time to consider using an Enterprise gateway instead. Is that an option for you?
