Data Agent fails to connect to semantic model

I have a power bi report in my workspace and am now trying to connect my analysis services semantic model used in that report to a data agent but am getting this error:

Failed to validate data source

Please try again

I should have complete rights to the semantic model as I have editing rights set in analysis service. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Hi @carlwikstrom ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

Please check the below things to fix the issue.

1. Please check the on-premises data gateway is installed and running on a machine that can access the Analysis Services instance and then restart the gateway service and verify it's online in the Power BI Service. If you are using Azure Relay, make sure Private Link is not enabled, as it's not supported.

2. If your semantic model is hosted on a different network or VM , check the firewall rules that allow traffic between the gateway and the Analysis Services server. Try to run the Power BI Desktop on the same machine as the Analysis Services server to isolate if it's a network issue.

3. check the credentials that used in the gateway match those with sufficient permissions on the Analysis Services model. If you are using Windows authentication, check the gateway is configured to impersonate the correct user.

4. Go to Manage Gateways in Power BI Service and verify the data source is correctly configured and the server name and database name match exactly and the authentication method is appropriate.

5. Open the on-premises data gateway app. Go to Diagnostics --> Export logs. Review logs for connection or credential errors.

6. Some times error will occur after upgrading Power BI Desktop. Try to use a previous version to test if the issue persists.
