Access to Custom Workload Developer Preview in Microsoft Fabric for Fabric Workload Development Kit

Hi,

We have a query and would like to get help on that!

We are trying to access "Custom Workload Developer Preview" and we are unable to do it.

We require access to the Microsoft Fabric Custom Workload Developer Preview feature for our tenant. We are following the GitHub sample: https://github.com/microsoft/Microsoft-Fabric-workload-development-sample and are receiving a `FeatureNotAvailable` error when running the DevGateway.

What are the ways to go ahead and fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Ashwath

Hi @Ashwath_Bala_S ,

Found the issue with your "FeatureNotAvailable" error - it's basically because the right switches aren't turned on in your tenant.

Here's what's missing:

Your Fabric admin needs to enable a couple of settings:

  • Go to Admin portal > Tenant settings > Additional workloads
  • Turn on "Workspace admins can develop partner workloads"
  • Then hit Settings > Developer settings and enable "Fabric Developer Mode"

Without these enabled, the Custom Workload Developer Preview just doesn't exist for your tenant - hence the FeatureNotAvailable error when DevGateway tries to connect.

You also need:

  • F or P SKU capacity (trial works fine)
  • Admin rights on the workspace you're using
  • Proper Entra ID app setup from the sample repo

The GitHub sample assumes these tenant settings are already on, but they're not enabled by default. Once your admin flips those switches, the DevGateway should connect without issues.

Pretty common gotcha with Fabric development - the feature exists but you can't see it until the tenant-level permissions are sorted.

Give it a try after enabling those settings and let me know if you're still hitting the same error.

Want to make sure I understand, are you trying to use the following branch? microsoft/Microsoft-Fabric-workload-development-sample at dev/preview/wdkv2
If so, it's in Private Preview (not public) so it requires Microsoft to enable you tenant. Please reach out to me if you require onboarding to the private preview (tebercov@microsoft.com)

Hi @Ashwath_Bala_S ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

Hi @burakkaragoz , Thank you for your prompt response.

Hi @Ashwath_Bala_S ,

The error indicates that your tenant or workspace is not properly configured to support custom workload development. The Microsoft Fabric Workload Development Kit is in preview, and required access for specific tenant-level and workspace-level settings to be enabled.

In addition to @burakkaragoz  response, I am adding one more point  and Microsoft official documents.

Please check whether you have downloaded and correctly configured the DevGateway component. This acts as a bridge between your local development environment and Fabric.

Please refer Microsoft official document.

I hope this information helps. Please do let us know if you have any further queries.
