Enable Service Principal Authentication for SharePoint Data Sources in Power BI
Many organizations use SharePoint (e.g., Excel files) as a data source for Power BI reports. Currently, business users rely on their personal SSO credentials to refresh semantic models, which leads to connection issues when:
The model owner leaves the company.
The owner's password changes.
Ownership of the model is transferred.
For other data sources like SQL databases, best practice is to use service accounts to avoid these issues. However, Power BI does not currently support Service Principal authentication for SharePoint sources.
