1044 TopicsAutomatically Recover from CSV Type Inference Errors for Citizen Developers
a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; } Power BI Desktop is an excellent tool for citizen developers who are unable to obtain direct database access within their organizations. One of the reasons I appreciate Power BI Desktop is that Microsoft allows users to start with a free desktop product. This makes it possible to demonstrate value and improve business processes before asking an organization to invest in paid services. In many large and conservative companies, users cannot connect directly to enterprise systems through DirectQuery, even when a technically better solution exists. Security reviews, approval processes, and organizational barriers often prevent access. As a result, many successful Power BI projects begin with CSV or Excel exports from business systems. For these users, Power BI Desktop is often the first step toward data visualization and business improvement. The ability to quickly connect to Excel files, CSV files, and folders containing multiple CSV files is one of the strengths that makes Power BI Desktop so valuable. Typical scenario A business system exports a CSV file containing values like: EmployeeID 1001 1002 1003 1004 Power BI automatically infers the column type as Number. Later, a different CSV export contains: EmployeeID 1001 1002 A1003 1004 The refresh fails because Power Query attempts to convert the value to Number. Why this is difficult for citizen developers For experienced Power BI users or software developers, the root cause is usually straightforward. For many citizen developers, however: The error message is difficult to understand. The automatically generated "Changed Type" step is not obvious. Users often do not know which step to modify. A user may change a later step to Text, but the error still occurs because the original type conversion step is executed earlier. The query can appear to be stuck in a broken state. Users may not know how to recover. Many users eventually abandon Power BI because they cannot identify the root cause. In my experience supporting business users, this is one of the most common situations where otherwise successful Power BI adoption efforts become stalled. Why CSV users are different Users with sufficient technical authority often obtain direct access to databases and use DirectQuery or other enterprise-grade approaches. When schemas change infrequently, these solutions can remain stable for a long time. CSV users are often different. Many of them are not choosing CSV because it is the technically ideal solution. They are using CSV because it is the only option available to them. Typical situations include: Security approval for database access is denied. Internal IT gatekeepers do not approve direct connections. Business users want to improve reporting but cannot obtain system-level support. As a result, they begin their analytics journey with CSV exports. For these users, unexpected type inference issues create a disproportionately large barrier. Suggested improvement When Power BI detects a data type conversion error from CSV or Excel sources, display a recovery dialog such as: A data type mismatch was detected. Column: EmployeeID Current Type: Number Incoming Value: A1003 CSV and Excel files often use automatic type detection based on sample data. This error commonly occurs when a newer file contains different values than the original sample. Would you like Power BI to change this column to Text and continue? [Yes] [No] [Don't show again] If the user chooses Yes, Power BI could automatically update the corresponding "Changed Type" step within Power Query. Why this matters I found many forum discussions related to: CSV type conversion errors DataFormat.Error messages Power Query type conversion problems "Changed Type" step issues Most discussions explain how to fix the issue after it occurs. My suggestion is different. I would like Power BI Desktop to improve the user experience itself by helping citizen developers recover automatically from these common CSV type inference problems. Reducing frustration around these errors would help more users continue using Power BI successfully. Many organizations begin their data analytics journey with CSV and Excel files long before they gain access to enterprise data platforms. Helping these users succeed would support broader adoption of Power BI. This suggestion comes from real-world experience supporting business users in large Japanese enterprises, where CSV-based reporting remains a common starting point for data visualization initiatives. Note This text was translated into English with the help of Microsoft Copilot. Japanese is my native language, and I may not be able to express every detail accurately in English. As a software developer, I personally find honest and practical feedback easier to understand than perfectly polished proposals. Because of that, I decided to share this idea as directly as possible rather than trying to make it overly formal. I hope the real-world problem behind this suggestion is useful to the Power BI team. Thank you for creating and maintaining Power BI Desktop. It has helped many users, including those working within highly constrained organizational environments, take meaningful first steps toward data-driven decision making.2Views0likes0CommentsPaginated Reports with PowerQuery - Cloud connections for Snowflake connector
Current situation: Power BI report builder used to build a report using Power Query dataset. Report builder picked the right cloud snowflake DB connection (created in Power BI service portal - app.powerbi.com) However, once we deployed / published the report into power bi service portal (workspace), we are not able to see the connection it uses in the background. We only see the disabled connection settings. Refer the screenshot. It would be great if we display the cloud connection information just like how we display for semantic models. Otherwise, we have to download the rdl file from the portal and check the connection ID from the report file and fetch the connection detail from the "Manage Connections and Gateways" page from the portal settings.2Views0likes0CommentsFabric Apps
Currently, Microsoft Fabric App is not available in several regions, and this limitation is significantly impacting our ability to move forward with key initiatives. We have an urgent business requirement to have Fabric App support enabled in the UK regions, as it would allow us to leverage its capabilities and accelerate the development of several high-value features and solutions. Enabling Fabric App availability in the UK regions would greatly benefit. What is Fabric Apps (Preview)? - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn756Views14likes2CommentsNew Monitoring Hub
Enjoying the new monitoring hub and the insights it brings. However, I have a few suggestions Display Start Time and Current Duration When clicking on Workspace, take me to the Workspace - like the Legacy Hub Remove the Pagination, we have a very busy capacity that we need to monitor Alerts for any running job that exceeds a time threshold, eg send email to admins where any refresh is taking longer than 60 minutes11Views0likes0CommentsMore Granular Workspace Permissions (RBAC)
Allow Workspace Admins to assign more granular permissions and create custom roles based on atomic permissions, following the principle of least privilege. Examples of possible atomic permissions: Read workspace settings Manage workspace settings Read workspace role assignments Manage workspace role assignments Read OneLake security access role assignments Read workspace activity logs Read data Write data Share read data permissions Share write data permissions Create and edit workspace items Delete workspace items Share create and edit workspace items Share delete workspace items etc. This would enable Workspace Admins to automate auditing and governance, delegate specific responsibilities, and follow least-privilege principles without granting unnecessarily broad workspace roles.8Views1like0CommentsRule to force only HC Sessions while working with interactive notebooks
As a Fabric Platform Admin, I would like to force users of specific workspaces to only be allowed to spin-up and use High Concurrency (HQ) Sessions while working interactively with notebooks. This can help with best capacity utilization and faster notebook startups.5Views0likes0CommentsEnable Direct Addition of Fabric Data Agents to Microsoft 365 Copilot
Please enable users to add and invoke a Fabric Data Agent directly as a specialized agent in a Microsoft 365 Copilot multi-agent solution. In our current setup, we can’t add a Fabric Data Agent directly to M365 Copilot, so we connect to it through Fabric IQ Data MCP. This approach raises a concern that we need to separately verify whether requests are routed to and handled by the intended Fabric Data Agent. That additional validation makes configuring and testing the multi-agent solution more complex. We request the ability to select and add a Fabric Data Agent directly as a subagent in the M365 Copilot multi-agent configuration, allowing the parent agent to delegate tasks to it directly. This would reduce the additional validation required for the intermediate MCP connection and make the multi-agent setup simpler and more transparent. This request is not a report of a defect in Fabric IQ Data MCP; it is a request for direct Fabric Data Agent integration in M365 Copilot. We also request that the Fabric Data Agent’s existing authentication, data-access permissions, and security policies continue to be enforced when using this direct integration. Can we have the option to turn off the notification when we add people to an audience in Power BI Apps? Sometimes, I want to share an app with a wider group of people, but I don't want to notify all of them. I just want to make sure they can access the app when they need to. We've been trying to get viewers in our organization out of workspaces, but we've been having to give viewer access to workspaces as a workaround when we are sharing with a large group.6Views0likes0CommentsUser Interface customization - HomePage & Help and support
Hi, 1st idea: It would be great if administrators could customize the Fabric/Power BI Home page. Today, users can choose between three predefined layouts (Copilot, Simplified, and Expanded). Allowing administrators to create and publish a custom layout for all users, with embedded report pages, visuals, quick-access buttons, and other tailored content, could significantly improve the user experience and adoption of the platform. 2nd idea: It would be great if administrators could customize the Help & Support menu by adding their own entries, renaming existing ones, and changing their order. This would make it easier to promote organization-specific documentation, support contacts, training resources, and other important links directly within the Fabric/Power BI experience.6Views0likes0Comments
