Service Principal as authentication type for SharePoint folder
We urgently need Service Principal as authentication type for SharePoint folders in Power BI Service (when creating connections that will be used in a gateway). It's available for SharePoint Online lists.

Agreed -- we have data files (excel, csv, txt) in sharepoint folders and need to access them from PowerBI. Ideally, we want to do this via a service principal account rather than individual accounts. Sharepoint lists are insufficient -- we have hundres of dynamic files and cannot convert them to lists.

I'm facing similar issue. Since it's working for sharepoint lists would be great to have it also for sharepoint folders.

Yup, just commented on another idea where this was mentioned. Need this for files as well as users will then OAuth when Get Data from Web from the Sharepoint folder is used as a source.

- surangatjFrequent VisitorYeah!! better if we have Service Principal auth for SharePoint folders, not just lists. Since it already works for SP lists, please extend to folders too.
- data_nikRegular VisitorWe also need this urgently! Perfect way would be via Workspace Identity also!
- abreezeFrequent VisitorJust spent the better part of a month trying to setup a SPN for a SharePoint site connection for Power BI only to be told it's not supported! Documentation on this is also lacking - our local Microsoft support team also did not know about this. Organisations have a legitimate reason to need SPNs instead of a user account to connect to their data. - Users leave - Reports are built and managed by teams - SharePoint is sometimes the only acceptable storage option - you don't want a fake user to hold a Power BI licence - you want to schedule data refreshes - you want least privilege security without having to deal with password resets (service accounts) All of these are reasons and more why organisations don't want to use OAuth or service accounts as the authentication method. Please expedite SPN support for SharePoint Online Folders ASAP.
