The Ask
There should be a new property (in the Model view) added for measures that allows developers to fill out a Preferred Name option. This Preferred Name option would be the defualt name when drag-and-dropped into visualizations, unless otherwise specified elsewhere.
The Why
Naming conventions between the visualization layer (for end user consumption) and the development layer (for developer management) are rarely in sync. When the developer has to manage numerous measures, perhaps hundreds, it helps to that naming conventions are enforce for ease of discovery. For example, maybe I want to prefix all distinct counts such as "DC: Sales," "DC: Orders," "DC: Customers," etc; this allows the developer to quickly search measures by typing "DC."
But this type of label would be very ugly at the presentation layer. It's unlikely that users want to see a metric named "DC: Sales."
