Scenario
Currently, slicers have two states:
- No value selected (bogs report down)
- BI dev preselects one or more data values (problematic when reports are consumed by other clients/users)
Option #2 is preferrable for performance (especially in the world of Fabric capacities), but this becomes a pain to maintain. If a default is needed that doesn't "hardcode" specific values, this requires adding some kind of dummy data record to provide "data-agnostic" selections.
Today, slicers either create a lot of extra work (especially in sensitive-data contexts) or present subpar reporting/user experience for these kinds of scenarios if devs don't address.
Feature Request
It would be really helpful if slicers came with the option to default slicers to a NO SELECTION value without BI devs having to create that themselves for slicers. Ideally:
- This would be sorted to top just like (BLANKS) are today.
- The display text would be customizable (e.g., I could change to -SELECT A VALUE-).
- This would be deselected after a user makes a selection even in multi-select enabled slicers.
From a data standpoint, this would mean report pages wouldn't show data until a user makes a selection.
