programming language to import from API and save to SQL database for Power BI

I would like to learn to write a program to import data via an API and save to a SQL database (possibly MS Data Lake? ) to then use the data in Power BI. What applications do you recommend to do this? Python, .net ? 

Data sets (API) ---> SQL DB ----> Power BI

Python and SQL are options but you may also want to look at Spark.
