Unknown Power BI Error

My organization received this error, unexpectedly, when attempting to update a .PBIX in production.

ServerError_DataflowWithMultipleWorkspacesUserException

Has anyone ever seen this exception before? I can't find any records of this error.

This error prevents us from uploading a select few dashboards, but we've had no luck and can't seem to find a root cause. No major changes were made to prompt this error.

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

The solution: Do not use dataflows. Honestly, if your company is small enough and you are also a software dev or data engineer, just make your own dashboarding tool and scrap Power BI altogether.

We had one dataflow that queried ~12 static files. We broke this dataflow out, in a new workspace, so each query had their own dataflow.

Old dataflow: One large dataflow. Many queries.

New dataflows: Many dataflows, one query each.

When I created the new, distinct dataflows, I forgot to change the workspace ID. APPARENTLY you can call a dataflow from ANY workspace ID, even if the dataflow isn't housed in that workspace, and you'll still get the data you need. Why? Microsoft.

So, yeah, the error is quite literal in that you cannot query dataflows from more than one workspace. Albeit, if you are NOT a software developer or data engineer, you might as well read Egyptian hieroglyphics, because that is at least legible compared to Microsoft errors and exceptions.

Hi  @rickyringler ,

Check if there are any duplicate dataflow in the workspace. if so, delete the duplicates and try uploading the dashboard again!

You can check if you have access to the dataflow by looking at the following link.

Troubleshoot dataflow issues - creating dataflows - Power Query | Microsoft Learn

Is your Power BI Desktop the latest version:

Download Power BI Desktop from Official Microsoft Download Center

Is there any more detailed error information, if so post it in a reply and we can help you better .

Hey @rickyringler ,

I have just received the same error. Have you found a solution to your problem?

Best regards,

Dominik

Hey @rickyringler ,

you are my hero!

There was a query in my ETL process where I had not entered the WorkspaceID correctly.
As you described, the data was still loaded correctly in the desktop version. Only the publishing did not work.

After I adjusted the ID of the workspace, publishing works again.

Thank you!

Best regards
