Data not Updating in Power BI Report deployed in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations

Hi dear community !

I have deployed a power bi report into D365 FO.
I have changed the data source credentials to have UAT temporary SQL connection through LCS.
The report is working fine on Power BI desktop using the temporary SQL connection string of UAT (Which I got from LCS).
The problem is now after I open my report inside D365FO, the report is not getting the new data.
I tried first to develop the report data source using "Direct Query" mode, but I was not able to deploy the report into D365FO because of an error which was preventing me of report deployment because the data source was on Direct Query Mode.
After I switched to "Imported" mode for the data sources, I was able to deploy the report successfuly inside D365FO.
But now the issue is the data of the report are not getting updated. It's still showing the data as per what was imported before deployment. No new data are being synched in the report.
How can I make the Power BI report to be up to date with data inside D365FO?
The data source I am using was SQL Server AxDB tables with imported mode.

Any advice is appreciated !
Thanks in advance !

Hi @I_NeedMorePower ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

You're using Power BI with D365 Finance and Operations (D365FO) and have deployed a report using Import mode with a UAT SQL connection. While the report works fine in Power BI Desktop, it's not showing updated data inside D365FO after deployment.

This happens because Import mode reports don't automatically refresh in D365FO. When you use Import mode, the data is stored within the report, and it doesn’t re-fetch data from the database unless you manually refresh and redeploy the report.

You tried DirectQuery, but that mode isn’t supported for embedded Power BI reports in D365FO.

You can try a few workarounds.

You have two options:

  1. Manual Refresh (Short Term):
Refresh the data in Power BI Desktop->save the file and then redeploy the .pbix to D365FO every time you want updated data.
  2. Use Power BI Service Integration
    • Publish the report to the Power BI Service.
    • Set up scheduled data refresh using a gateway.
    • Connect D365FO to that report using Power BI workspace integration (not via a .pbix file).

Hi dear v-bmanikante,

Thank you for your detailed reply.

Unfortunately the requirement is to have the power BI reports embedded inside D365FO and have up to date data.

So the first option will not meet the requirement.

as for the 2nd suggestion, this will require a pro license at least to share the report between users. So this might be an alternative solution.

I believe there is a way to embed the Power BI report in D365 and have up to date data.

I'm looking for solutions and I read an article to look into having the power bi datasources to be in "Direct Query" mode but instead of reading the tables from AxDB, it should read from AxDW (Data warehouse, Entity Store). But I still need to try it.

The strange thing is that when data sources were in "Direct Query" mode, the deployment was hitting an error. So maybe it was because directing to AxDB.

I will try with AxDW and see if the deployment will succeed.

Appreciate your help and support !
