why would merge columns on an attempt to add a column be grayed out

Hi.  I tried to add a column today to a couple of queries and the merge columns icon was grayed.  why?   i've done ity before in other reports.

sorry, apparently pbi requires that the columns be hilighted before it will enable the merge columns icon.  makes sense, it just threw me because i'd used it once before and probably already (accidentally?) had maybe one or 2 columns already hilighted and misled myself into thinking it would always be enabled.
