I cannot find a way to format this slicer so that the white part of the drop down matches the darker background. Is this possible to change?

Just do formatting-> Items-> Background as below:

In the formatting options for your slicer, there should be a section for Background. Just turn the background to Off, or set it as you see fit.

The background is already set to off.
