tracking data in a month

I pull data from our CRM to track "Won" projects on a monthly basis.  The count increases when the status changes to "Active" in the database. However if we finish a new job in the same month the project then changes to "complete" and consequently dissapears from the total value.  I cant search for just "Active" and "completed" projects as this would give me any project that finished in the month.  I believe I need to track "active" in the month as well as "completed" in the month (with a start date of the same month) but I am not sure of the syntax for this, looking for ideas.
