Hi fellow PBI users...
I tried to turn on "Shape map visual" by going to File -> Options and Settings -> Options -> Preview features
However, I do not see "Preview features"
I would like to show a map of the state and the counties in different colors with measures for each counties + I'd like to group the counties into regions 1,2,3 etc and assign those regions with different colors.
Do I need Shape Map to accomplish this?
If yes, how can I get it?
If not, can someone point me to a source where I can learn how to accomplish this without Shape Map?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Aniya,
Thank you for responding to my question.
The version of PBI Desktop I downloaded from our Report Server (May 2022) does not have "Shape Map".
After taking your suggestion and I downloaded the latest version of Power BI Desktop, I loaded an existing pbix file and attempted to upload it to our Report Server and I received an error message saying that the new version of the pbix is not compatible with our current Report Server version.
So because of incompatibility, I cannot use the new version of Power BI Desktop.
I checked out the link you sent for icon-map but it does not appear to create county map shapes.
Can you suggest any other sites?
Hi , @datafan
After my tests, "Shape map visual" is visible in Options in Power Bi Desktop .
I recommend that you update to the most recent Power BI Desktop release, you can refer to :
What's new in the latest Power BI update - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
Nevertheless, you can consider to use a custom visual called icon-map: https://icon-map.com

Hi again Aniya,
I am trying to use the new vesion of the PBI Desktop to create a map with US states and counties to see how it's done.
I downloaded Drilldown Choropleth into the latest PBI Desktop, the one with the Shape map and I googled and downloaded a US state and US county shape file. When I attempt to them to "Format visual" Level 1 and Level 2, I get an error message: "INVALID JSON FILE".
I did a search and I got the following result but no solution.
https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/JSON-for-Drilldown-Choropleth/td-p/1220210
Another search.
No solution found.
Can you point me to a source for shape files that are compatible with the Drilldown choropleth?
If not the Drilldown choropleth, what other app I can use to accomplish the map.
Note: I've seen this done in Tableau before and from what I heard it was quite straightforward.
Hi , @datafan
As searched , i hope you can refer to this document, it may help you :
