fails with 'An error occurred while loading to the model.'

I am trying to import a new table from Google BigQuery into my existing Power BI Desktop report, but I keep getting the error "An error occurred while loading to the model."

However, if I create a brand-new report and import the same table, it works without any issue.

In addition, I can still refresh the old tables (that were previously imported into the existing report) without any problem. The issue only occurs when I try to import a new table into the existing PBIX file.

Could you please help me understand why this is happening and how to resolve it?

I have already tried the following troubleshooting steps, but the issue still persists:

  • Opened Power Query Editor in the old PBIX and checked each step → deleted or adjusted any steps with errors to match the current schema, but it didn’t resolve the problem.

  • Deleted relationships that were linked to the old tables.

  • Disabled Auto Date/Time in the file options.

What else could be causing this issue, and how can I fix it?

Based on my understanding, since the table loads correctly in a new PBIX file but fails in the existing one, the issue appears to lie with the model metadata within the current PBIX rather than with BigQuery itself. This might be due to cached relationships, hidden dependencies, or minor corruption in the file.

Please follow the steps below, which may help to resolve the issue:

  1. Manually import the query. In the new PBIX where the table loads correctly, open Power Query Editor, go to Advanced Editor, and copy the complete M query. In the existing PBIX, go to Get Data, select Blank Query, open Advanced Editor, paste the copied query, and then click Load.
  2. Clear local Power BI caches. Close Power BI Desktop and delete the following folders:
    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\AnalysisServicesWorkspaces\
    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop\Traces\
    Reopen the PBIX file and attempt the import again.
  3. Test with a smaller copy of the model. Save a copy of the PBIX and remove most tables. Try adding the BigQuery table. If it succeeds, re-add tables gradually to identify whether a specific table or measure is causing the conflict.

On the original model - did you ever edit it with a third party tool like Tabular Editor?

I did not modify the data model using any external tools. I performed the Get Data operation directly in Power BI Desktop.

Do you have the auto date/time turned off in both global and current settings? Also, try turning Autodetect new relationships after data is loaded in the Data Load section under Current File. 

 

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon.
