desktop report was connected to DB Server1. Is it possible to make a switch to server2 in service?

There are two independent database servers set up on a remote virtual machine, along with a Power BI gateway.

Currently, the report data in Power BI Desktop is connected to Database 1 through DirectQuery mode.

After being published to the service, the gateway is configured in the service to map the data to Database 1.

Now, there is a desire to switch the data source on the service to Database 2. Both Database 1 and Database 2 have the same database names, table names, and field names.

The report that was published previously was connected to Database Server 1. Is it possible to make this switch? If so, how?

Hi, @oakgogo

According to your description, switching the data source for a Power BI report in the service from Database 1 to Database 2 is feasible. Here’s how you can achieve this

1.Download the Dataset
First, download the dataset from Power BI online as a file.
Open the downloaded file in Power BI Desktop.
2.Modify Data Source Settings
In Power BI Desktop, go to File > Options and settings > Data source settings.
Ensure that “Data sources in current file” is selected.
Choose the data source that needs to be changed (in this case, Database 1).
Click “Change Source”.
Update the server and database name to point to Database 2.
Click “OK”.
3.Edit Credentials
Click “Edit Permissions” and enter the relevant credentials for Database 2.
Save your changes by clicking “Save” and then “OK”.
4.Apply Changes
Close the Data Source Settings window.
You’ll be prompted about pending changes. Click “Apply changes”.
