deployment pipeline vs data source parameters

I have been working on 3 different files: dev, test and prod for my project, and recently i learned about deployment pipelines and data source parameters.  Which is the better approach?  I think with pipelines, I need 3 separate working environments, where as parameters does not i believe.

@wpf_ , Deployement pipline can be managed at power bi service. As far I know Intial data load will taken care there by pipeline.
