Hi @vishal112005

The error you're encountering is related to an SSL certificate issue when attempting to connect to a Microsoft SQL Server from Power BI. The message says:

"The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted."

This typically indicates that Power BI is trying to establish a secure connection, but the SSL certificate used by your SQL Server is either self-signed or issued by an untrusted certificate authority (CA).

Here are several approaches you can take to resolve the issue:

1. Install the Certificate:

  • You may need to install the root or intermediate certificate from the server's SSL certificate onto the machine where Power BI is running.
  • Contact your SQL Server administrator to obtain the correct certificate and install it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store on your machine.

2. Disable SSL Requirement in Power BI Desktop:

  • If your environment allows, you can disable SSL encryption for this specific connection by doing the following:
    • In Power BI Desktop, click on File > Options and settings > Data source settings.
    • Find your SQL Server connection and click Edit.
    • In the Advanced options, you can try setting the Encrypt Connection option to false. This will bypass SSL encryption, though it's only advisable if your data does not require encrypted transmission.

3. Validate the SQL Server Configuration:

  • If you're the SQL Server administrator or working with one, make sure that the SQL Server has a valid SSL certificate installed.
  • You can configure SQL Server to use a certificate issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA), which should resolve the trust issue.

4. Use a VPN or Private Network:

  • If this issue is occurring because you're connecting to a remote server over an unsecured network, consider using a VPN or ensuring that your connection is within a trusted network.

5. Update Power BI Desktop:

  • Sometimes, these errors are due to compatibility issues with older versions of Power BI Desktop. Ensure you're using the latest version, as updates may include fixes related to SSL or security.

6. Check Your Organization’s Group Policies:

  • In some cases, group policies or firewall settings might block untrusted SSL connections. If you're in a corporate environment, check with your IT team to ensure there are no security policies blocking the SSL certificate from being trusted.

Steps to Try:

  1. Install any missing certificates.
  2. Disable encryption if allowed for testing purposes.
  3. Check SQL Server SSL settings to see if a valid certificate is properly installed.
