connect to oracle with odac or oracle client

At the moment we use the ODAC as descibed in https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/powerbi-desktop-connect-oracle-database/ . And it works fine for Power BI Desktop (Versie: 2.46.4732.581 64-bit (mei 2017)).

But we have some other applications that don't work if the ODAC is on there machine, they need the oracle client (oracle client 12.1.0.2 64 bit full version). If we only install the oracle client and not the ODAC we get the next message:

"The recommended provider ('Oracle.DataAccess.Client') is not installed. You can continue with your current provider, however it has been deprecated and may not work properly."

But if we continue everything seems to work fine. We looked at the DLL's and it seems ODAC en oracle client use the same.

Is there any reason why Microsoft advises the ODAC driver?

Anyone else has experience using only the oracle client 12.1?

@Knud,

As the message describes, ODAC is need if you want to connect to Oracle database. In your scenario, you said that "some other applications that don't work if the ODAC is on there machine, they need the oracle client ", you could install both Oracle client and ODAV dirver in your machines.

Besides, you could try to install latest version of Power BI desktop and check if this issue persists or not.

Thanks for you reaction.

The problem is that those other applications don't work if ODAC is installed.

That's why we only installed the oracle client. And this seems to work, with the warning as mentioned.
