change date selections in date slicer based on choice of quarter or month

Hi.

I have a date table that has a date field, a quarter-year field for the quarter/year  of the date, a monthlabel for the month-year of the date.  I created a parameter for my x axis that switches between "monthlabel" and "quarter-year"  and changes with the slicer choice of those two.

However, I also need the user to be able to choose WHICH quarters and WHICH monthlabels they want to see when the axis changes.

So, say they use the first slicer to choose "quarter-year" for their x axis.  I then want a date-based slicer that only shows the quarter-year values (e.g. Q3-2025, Q4-2025) if they choose "quarter-year" in case they only want to see two quarters in the graph; i.e. only show the values inside the 2nd circled column below.  Similarly, I want the slicer to only show "monthLabel" values (e.g. Mar-2025, Jun-2025) if the user chooses "MonthLabel" .  i.e only show the values in the first column circled below.   When I try to create a dax field (or measure) based on switch, it won't accept the switching of column values into the new column or measure dynamically (of course).

Thanks!

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hello.  I was trying to find the solution that was provided to me..  Possibly I accidentally had two threads going(?)  Not sure why I can't find it.

However, the solution was to create the first qtr/month choice slicer using the parameter.  Then I copied that slicer and changed it to a table which revealed the values.  I then reverted to a slicer.  I apologize for the poor quality of pictures; it was tricky getting the drop down to show in the screen copy.

Addendum:  I found the link where I was provided the solution:

Hi @lauriedata

Field parameters in Power BI are designed to switch fields inside visuals, not to control slicer behavior. That’s why a slicer can’t automatically adjust between month and quarter labels based on the parameter selection.

If your goal is to let users switch between monthly and quarterly views, there are two practical approaches:

Page navigation – Create separate report pages for each view (quarter or month), each with its own slicer, and use buttons or a parameter selector to navigate between them.

Bookmarks – If you want to keep everything on one page, set up two slicers (month and quarter) and save each state as a bookmark. Then use a button or toggle to switch between them.

Trying to make a single parameter dynamically change both the axis and the slicer selection isn’t supported by the Power BI engine.
