Hello,

As I am using huge tables, I prefer to use the directQuery mode.

Usually, I connect to power bi using my regular account number while when I connect to sql server, I use an alternate account number (an admin account).

However, I not able to use the directQueryMode.

I receive the following message:

Refresh .

Alternate credentials for Windows authentification is not supported in DirectQuery mode. User your current windows credentials, supply a database credential, or switch to import mode

Does someone know how to overcome this difficulties.

you are running PBI Desktop under you windows account.   anything it runs is under that context -    My suggestion to you is to use a SQL server account when using directquery rather than your AD account.   It will also work for you if you publish this pbix to the service since the account is needed to refresh the model if you schedule it to refresh there.

every instance of using directquery we have used always used a SQL Account.   It depends on how you are dealing with Row Level security on the backend -  Having said that,  we rearely use directquery.

Using Directquery is a double edged sword.   when you get into complex reporting on the Viz side you can run into performance issues since aggregations,  etc  have to be calculated at runtime.   You have to weigh the pros and the cons.
