Why do I get an error when trying to import an Excel file into Power BI?

When I try to import an Excel file or enter data manually into Power BI Desktop I get the following error:

Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'The provider 'Microsoft.PowerBI.OleDb' is not registered. The following system error occurred: Class not registered’.

I am using Power BI Desktop x64 and Excel x32 bit.

Hi @HamidBee ,

The issue may be caused by the bit-version mismatch. Please try the following methods, later check if it can connect to excel file or user "Enter data" function successfully.

1. Uninstall and Reinstall Power Bi Dekstop

  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run.
  • Type control and click OK to open the Control Panel.
  • Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
  • Select and uninstall Power Bi app.
  • Now go to Power Bi download page and download the latest version.

2. Install the 64-bit version Office

Change the bit-version of Microsoft Office to match the bit-version of your Power BI Desktop installation:

  1. Uninstall Microsoft Office

  2. Install the version of Office that matches your Power BI Desktop installation.

3. Delete and recreate Shortcut

Fix: Power Bi error the provider is not registered

  1.  Try to delete the Power Bi shortcut from the desktop.
  2. Now create a new shortcut from the Start screen for the Desktop.
  3. Or simply try to open the Power Bi app from the start screen.
