Web.Contents won't connect anonymously but also won't allow us to use Basic auth

We have an API for which the basic auth credentials need to be passed as a header. Power BI refuses to connect automatically to ANY part of the web data source URL so we are essentially stuck unable to connect.

Here is what has been attempted:

1) Pass authorization header in web.contents, put anonymous as data source settings >> this fails because power BI says it can't connect anonymously (despite very much being able to hit at least the base URL of the call anonymously in browser).

2) Pass authorization header in web.contents, put basic as data source settings >> this fails because Power BI says we can't use both basic auth and a header

3) remove auth from header, pass only in power BI data source settings >> this causes the API to 400 error on a call that is otherwise successful in a REST client

Please assist. I have no idea why Power BI is so god awful with REST APIs in the year 2023 when almost everything is a REST API but Microsoft needs to catch this up.

Thank you - the first one is not relevant because I have tried relative path already, the second one is for a POST not a GET and I have tried deleting global data source settings (which is suggested there) and it did not help. The last one suggests using anonymous as the solution which is not working for me. Thanks for the articles but none of the address this specific issue unfortunately.
