In case you have trouble displaying data locations in a map visualization, you must select the location field and some contextual tabs will appear on the ribbon. On the "Column Tools" tab you must select a category from the Data Category drop-down menu.
As soon as I select a category (in my case, "City") the map correctly displays my data:
