Utilization Data

Has anyone had any experience displaying utilization rates for fleet vehicles? I'm having trouble combining the variables into a usable metric.

For example, I'm trying to visualize the fleet's availability by day and hour, factoring in the duration of reservations and how that impacts fleet availability.

Hello amaasen,

Could you elaborate a little bit more about what you're exactly you're trying to achieve? In my organization, we have done something similar to what you're trying to achieve. A couple things for you to consider:

  • Time vehicles are available (e.g. are vehicles only available 8a - 5p every day? 24hrs a day?)
  • Calculate all time(s) a vehicle is booked
  • Utilization rate (Booked time / Available time)

You can consider building your model along the STAR schema guidelines, where you have your main fact table (vehicle booking times), a date(/time) dim table, and a vehicle dim table.

This should get you started, but let me know if there's more you're hoping to achieve

The screen shot below is an example of what we are trying to achieve. It aggregates all available vehicles by day and time slot. This accounts for some vehicles being booked starting at 7am for the entire day and others that are only booked for a short increment.

Yes, so what you could do is calculate the time available per vehicle (your denominator) and the time a vehicle is booked (your numerator), which should give you your % utilization. From there you can aggregate based on time and day.
