Hi all,
I’m exploring whether Cursor AI can be used effectively in Power BI report development.
I understand that .pbix files can't be opened or edited directly in Cursor, but it can help with tasks like:
Writing DAX/M code
I also came across the idea of Model Context Protocol (MCP) being used in some AI tooling — is there any way to simulate this with Cursor ?
Has anyone tried integrating AI tools like Cursor into their Power BI ?
Thanks!
Thanks @SamsonTruong and @v-pgoloju, Copilot is definitely well-suited for Power BI since it's built specifically for it. I was just curious if there's any way to use or simulate Model Context Protocol (MCP) within Power BI, or through tools like Cursor AI.
Would love to hear if anyone's explored that.

Hi @nlgupta ,
While I haven't leveraged Cursor in Power BI, I have heavily leveraged Copilot, Power BI's built in LLM. So far Copilot has been able to do a lot of cool things in Power BI from developing entire reports, creating DAX measures/calculated columns, creating metadata definitions, providing report summaries via narrative visuals, and so much more. While in Fabric, Copilot can also be applied to different data sources, allowing the LLM to leverage data across your ecosystem for analytics. Here is some documentation showcasing some of Copilot's capabilities:
If this helped, please mark it as the solution so others can benefit too. And if you found it useful, kudos
are always appreciated.
Thanks,
Samson
