Unable to open pbix file in PowerBI Desktop

Hi there,

Im looking for some help with a power bi file.

Environment:

Azure SQL DB

AAS Data Model
PowerBI Desktop x64

Issue:

I am uable to open a pbix file (linked to the data model) in PowerBI Desktop.  I haven't opened the file since 2020, but it was working fine then.

Here's what happens.

  1. I open the file, PowerBI opens, I am logged into the desktop app with my windows account.
  2. I am prompted for credentials to view the report.
  3. I choose "basic" leave the password blank and I get the login popup window
  4. I input my email address & password
  5. I approve the 2FA login in authenticator
  6. I am prompted again for login details.  It appears to be stuck in a login loop as it just keeps prompting for credentials.
  7. After entering login details multiple times (11 tries!!) I get a message saying "Failed to load the report."

I have tried the following to rectify:

  1. Tried downloading and opening the Model from AAS
  2. Logged into PowerBI service, I can access the report fine.  Download the file and try to open it - Same error applies.
  3. I have looked at permissions.  Appears ok here unless i am missing something.

Anyone got any ideas

I have spoken with the PowerBI support team and they have advised that connecting to AAS from PowerBI Desktop does not support Windows or Basic authentication!  Only Microsoft Account is supported according to this article

Is this correct, when did this change?

How do users inside my organisation access AAS models from PowerBI otherwise?

I am have "Owner" permissions to the AAS and model.

I can access the data from Excel, powerbi service and SSMS,  PowerBI Desktop seems to be the problem accessing the data.

Hi @MrToast20 ,

Please check if the server name and credential you have input is valid.

Update:

It seems there are issue when connecting to the model, not just the pbix file.

E.g
I open PowerBI
Click Get Data
Choose Azure Analysis Services Database
Enter username
Enter Password and MFA code
I can see my model, I click it and then OK
I'm prompted for password again, this just loops.

@amitchandak

I have tried 3 older versions of powerbi none of them will open.  Various errors so I am unable to test in an older version.  Any other ideas?

@MrToast20 , Which version of power bi you are using? Try a little older version and check
