Hi all,
Maybe it's possible, maybe not. I have the following question:
I have a table that looks a bit like this(overly simplified).
Company Name ID
Test1 John 100
Test2 Joe 100
Test1 Testname 101
I have a table visual where i can select the name value.
What i want is that when i select the value John with id 100 it also automatically grabs Joe with id 100 and the other way around.
So basically relate to a record in the same table with the same id.
Is there a possibilty for this in powerbi?
Many thanks!
Hi @Joe_100,
No, it is not possible.
Since you have selected the value John, the dataset is filtered with this value. In other words, aprat from the record where Name is John is available, all other records are filtered out, which cannot be accessed in visual.

Yuliana Gu
Instead of using a table visual where the user is selecting the name value, user should select from a merged column of 'Name' and 'ID'. This can be done in Query Editor:
i. Right click on 'Name' column and click on duplicate column.
ii. Right click on 'ID' column and click on duplicate column.
iii. Press control key on keyboard and select both the duplicated columns.
iv. Right click on the header of either of the selected columns and click Merge Columns.
v. Click on Close and apply changes in Home tab.
Now using this merged column would help you select the exact records you need.
Hope this helps!
Hi bizbi,
thanks for your reply, although i'm not sure if we are on the same page 😉
What i try to achieve is maybe a bit more complicated, and i don't see how merging column will solve this.
Let me try to explain what i want to achieve;
I have one table and basically some records are related to each other.
It doen's really mather what kind of visual i take (slicer, table, matrix) but at the moment i select a record in the visual it needs to search in that same table if there is a related record and also mark this record in the visual.
I need a sort of lookup that starts on the moment of selecting something in the visual....
Hope this helps a bit.
Is it not possible to put a slicer using ID column?
My best guess is that IDs are not user friendly so probably you need names.
In such a scenario, a possible workaround is to put the ID slicer next to your existing table. Selecting a 'Select All' option on the ID slicer can do the trick.
Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunetaly it's not working.
If i select a record on the table it won't filter the slicer.
I'm a bit afraid that what i want is not possible...
Got the workaround to work.
Between the table and the slicer discussed earlier, just use Attribute Slicer (import from Marketplace) and use the name column in it. It gives the flexibility to search by typing the name. Entering 'John' into it would automatically both the table and the slicer to fields related with John. Now select '100' in the slicer and it's done.
Though a bit lengthy, but hope it works for your case.
