Sort By updated in service but not in desktop

I have a custom semantic model from lakehouse tables. I updated the sort by of the 'accounting_period_label' column in the pbi service. I have refreshed and gone back into the model to confirm the change held, and it did.

The problem is when I go to desktop and live connect to this model the sort by column for 'accounting_period_label' is still the default.

I have tried refreshing the model in the service and refreshing the connection in the desktop app.

In the service:

In the desktop app:

Am I missing something? Any other changes I make to the model in the service, I can immediately see the changes in the desktop app.

Thanks

Hi @jbxfd ,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

@Greg_Deckler ,

Thanks for your prompt response

@jbxfd Based on the details you shared, here are a few workarounds you can try to help resolve the issue.

1.Manually Reapply the Sort in Desktop Report Visuals: Even though you're live connected, Desktop doesn’t always inherit metadata like Sort by Column. Try explicitly setting the sort in the visual's fields pane.

2. Use a Calculated Column with Sort Order: If accounting_period_label is backed by a numerical or sortable key (like accounting_period_code), ensure that column is part of the model and explicitly reference it in Desktop for sorting especially if you're customizing visuals there.

3.Refresh Metadata via Live Connection: Sometimes Power BI Desktop caches schema metadata. Try:

  • Removing and readding the live connection (under Transform Data > Data Source Settings).
  • Or going to Model view, then Refresh All to pull the latest metadata.

4.  Deploy the Model from Desktop: If you want full control and consistency, you could make the change in a local Power BI Desktop file (PBIX), then publish it to the service. This ensures the metadata behaves predictably across both environments

@Greg_Deckler
The selected sort by is actually working. I suppose I should have checked that sooner. So the issue is the desktop is not reflecting the actual sort by from the live connected model in the selection box but it is using it.

@jbxfd Sounds like a bug to me.
