Slow Power BI report despite fast query in SSMS

Hi,

I have a Power BI report using DirectQuery where the query finishes in under 1 minute. Howeve, the single matrix visual contained in the report takes 7+ minutes to load.

After I add a slicer and make selections on the slicer, the report takes an additional 1 minute to display the selections in the slicer, and it is taking forever to refresh the matrix visual.

The underlying data source contains about 7000 records.

This same report runs instantly when connected to a local excel data source with the same amount of data.

What causes the slowness of this report in Power BI when querying directly from SQL server? What could be done to make this faster?

@seafish,

You may take a look at Guidance for using DirectQuery successfully.
