Show Markers Only for Negative Values in Power BI Line Chart

Hi Community,

I am working on a line chart in Power BI where I need to highlight only the negative values of a measure with markers (e.g., red dots), while keeping the rest of the line without markers.

Currently, I added an additional measure like this:

Net Cashflow Negative = VAR NetCF = SUM(Finance[NetCashflow]) RETURN IF(NetCF < 0, NetCF, BLANK())

Then I added it to the chart as a separate series and turned on markers for this series.
This works — the markers appear only for negative values — but the issue is:

  • The tooltip now shows “Net Cashflow” and “Net Cashflow Negative” separately (duplicate values for negatives).

  • I want it to show only one Net Cashflow value in the tooltip, but still display markers on negatives.

    Is there a way to:

    1. Apply conditional formatting directly to markers (e.g., show markers only if value < 0)?

    2. Or hide/remove the duplicate “Negative” series from the tooltip?

Any suggestions or best practices would be really helpful

      Thanks in advance!

Hi @Janardhan_T

Have you considered using a Page tooltip, then only put the fields you want on it.

I also tried using condition formatting on the visuals but couldn't get measure name to work 😕

Hi @Janardhan_T ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.

In Power BI, the native line chart doesn’t support conditional markers. Please refer below alternative workaround.

Please follow below steps.

1. Created sample data based on your screenshot.

2. Created Net Cashflow and Net Cashflow Negative Measures.

3. In Line Chart, Month on X-axis and both measures Net Cashflow and Net Cashflow Negative on Y-axis.

4. In Format Visual, For Net Cashflow --> Keep line visible and Turn markers OFF. For Net Cashflow Negative --> Set line to none and Turn markers ON.

5. Go to Format --> Tooltip --> Fields, Remove Net Cashflow Negative and Keep only Net Cashflow.

Please refer below snaps and attached PBIX file.

Hi,

You can't dynamically change the markers.

But maybe you can use the Data Labels and even Leader Lines within them, to highlight your negative values. For both Data label colour and Leaders line you can define colour dynamically via Measure ;-)... if you don't want to have Data Labels, make them transparent and play just wit Leaders Lines

In this example, I just hardcoded colour for all Leader lines.... but you can apply colour dynamically and play with Width as you want 🙂
