Can Power BI be used to monitor server status (online, offline, and time offline)? If so, what would be the best tools or way to do this.
Thanks
Yes, this is possible - you can use Power Query M-code to achieve this.
Write M code to create a list of services/Server URLs
Create a function that takes a URL from the list and checks if the server is up or down
Return the results in a table
And finally, schedule the refresh of your data as required.
If this is not possible, create an API for Postman and connect this API to you M Code.
Hi @guyinazo,
Is there any rest API that can be used to trace your server status? If that is the case, you can use power bi to invoke the rest API and design a report for trace server status.
If not, you may need to deploy API/service/probe for trace service status then you can view and get data from other tools.
Regards,
Xiaoxin Sheng
@guyinazo Power BI will not ping the server to check the status, you need to use other tools (I'm not a network/system expert) to determine the status and then feed the data to Power BI. I'm sure there are tons of tools that can do this for you but Power BI is not the right tool to determine the status, it is purely for visualization.

@guyinazo not sure what you are looking for, you can use the streaming dataset if your server can send the data, and then you can visualize it. Real-time streaming in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Docs

System statuses is what I am looking for. If a system is down (usually a service run on a server or the server itself), run a steady ping or whatever it would be to report the server system status. Maybe a query of the server logs. And I also know another wrench to this is if the system is cloud-based, on-prem, hosted, etc. But yeah, if I knew what I was looking for then I wouldn't ask. But there would be a dashboard of KPIs with our various system statuses and logs.
