Hi,

In my power bi the command "selectedvalue" does not show up when i try to type in a formula. I have a live connection to a datawarehouse. 

Do i need to check off something for it to work?

You should be able to use that function, no seperate setup is needed, are you using inside any other fomulas/ measures? can u post the snapshot?

It could be because SELECTEDVALUE is not supported in DirectQuery mode.

Go to Options -> Direct Query -> Select " Allow unrestricted measures in Direct Query mode",  then you can use the function in direct Query mode too.
