Schedule Refresh with Desktop

Hello,

I am using the Desktop to connect to our Dynamics 365 account because I need to see some data that I can not see in the online content pack.

Is there a way to have my Dynamics 365 visuals that I created on the desktop to have a schedule refresh without having to manually refesh the data and re-publish it?

Hi @TexasBI,

Do you connect to Dynamics 365 (online) or on-premises Dynamics 365 in Power BI Desktop? If it is the former case, no gateway is required when refreshing your dataset in Power BI Service. After you publish reports to Power BI Service, go to Settings->Datasets and find your dataset, you should find that Power BI Service connect directly to your Dynamics 365 (online) data source, after you edit the credential for your data source, you  are able to schedule the dataset to refresh daily or schedule it to refresh in different date time, there is a similar example for your reference.

However, if you connect to on-premises Dynamics 365 in Power BI Desktop, do you use personal gateway or on-premises gateway? Please install personal gateway and use it to refresh your dataset, you can review this article to get more details.

Thanks,

if you can push it to the service you should be able to set up a schedule but you need the gateway set up, and it probably needs a pro license, but maybe you know this?

If I took the time to answer your question and I came up with a solution, please mark my post as a solution and /or give kudos freely for the effort 🙂 Thank you!

If you are using Dynamics 365 on prem, you will need a gateway, otherwise Dynamics 365 is a cloud service, so no gateway needed for refresh.  However, you will need to publish your report to the service to avoid manual refreshes in the desktop app.  I believe that you won't need to schedule a refresh either, as cloud data sources are automatically refreshed periodically.

Hey @dkay84_PowerBI @vanessafvg

I connected to Dynamics 365 through the Desktop, then published to Online, then tried to do a refresh now, and I get the error that says it needs data credentials.

I turned on a gateway to see if that would work but the gateway would not recognize the app.

Thank you for your help by the way. What do you think the problem is? Am I doing something wrong?
