I am working on a project where I need to import around 1000 tables from SQL SERVER, totaling about 100MB of data. However, Power BI Desktop crashes when I request the import. I cannot upload the databases gradually because all databases update when I request the import. What should I do to solve this? Is the issue related to the server capacity? Is it related to my PC's hardware?
You are only allowed about 1GB of data for a pbix model or available memory on your laptop for the Analysis Services to place in RAM. To find the spot it is giving you an error, try loading 5-10 tables at a time, if sucessful, save pbix file. Right click on the tables(queries) imported in Power Query and uncheck Enable Load. This will prevent the currently imported tables to be loaded again. Repeat, maybe even saving as different pbix filenames until you get to the issue.
Once you find the issue, see if you can create a view in SQL Server to limit the data from the table. There might be some columnss (like large text columns - iamges, varchar(8000), nvarchar(4000), varchar(max), nvarchar(max)) that can be exclude from the model. These types of columns are usually not reported in an analytical database/visual/
You will eventually will have to place the chech back to Enable Load, but then that can be handled with another post. Like using Tabular Editor to post model to Power BI Service, then refresh in the service.
