Rights on SQL required? Read-only?

Hi All,

I am wondering in Power BI desktop, when I connect to SQL source, can I just an account with read-only rights to the SQL? Or will I need read/write access to access to the tables in the database?

Is there any differences?

Thanks and Regards,

Wendy Woo

@WW when you connect to sql server via power bi desktop you get option to specify windows / sql server credentials. I think read only access should be fine as you're not writing back anything to tables via power bi.

Thanks for the input! That is my guess as well.

I am doing some trial testing on test servers, I am able to connect. However I am not sure if this impacts the tables that I am seeing.

I notice some differences in the tables return when i provide read only or read/write access and I can't have an explanation as to why, or if it might be due to other reasons.

I am connecting to SCCM-SQL DB to use create some management dashboard.

@WW

What's the difference in tables?

Read only and read/write access should reutrn same result when retrieving data. Make sure you connect same data source. If these two different permission are for different login, please check if there's any setting on permission in source table. Also please directly run T-SQL query in source table see if it can return same results.
