Taking over Dataflow Gen2 but still "Read Only"

Hello,

My colleague set up a Gen2 Dataflow originally that writes to a Lakehouse destination. They usually run it for our daily updates but since they'll be out of the office for two weeks I need to find a way that I can run it while they're out.

I've tried the "Take Over" method and created a new connection with my credentials to the Lakehouse when prompted and that part seems to work fine. The dataflow runs and I see the preview populate succesfully but at the top it still says I'm viewing the dataflow in Read-Only mode. I need to change this since we have daily updates and need to update the Lakehouse with the new data.

Am I missing any additional steps to get this part to work? Or how do I get editing permission?

I'm an admin in the workspace and have the same credentials as my colleague.

Thank you for the help in advance.

  • That error means the editor still doesn't see you as the owner. Read-only mode in Fabric dataflows is an ownership thing, not a permissions thing as you mentioned, so workspace admin doesn't help here. The takeover either didn't fully stick or your browser session is stale.

    Try this in order:

    1. Confirm the takeover actually went through. Open the dataflow's Settings from the workspace (three dots, Settings). If you still see a Take over button there, ownership never transferred. Click it again and give it a minute or two.
    2. Close the editor completely and reopen. The editor caches the ownership state from when the page loaded, so if you took over while the dataflow was open in a tab, that tab stays read-only forever. A hard refresh or an incognito window clears it.
    3. Make sure no refresh is running when you open it. You can't edit during a refresh.

If it still shows read-only after all that, the takeover is silently failing, which has been a known bug before. At that point I'd open a support ticket.

One more thing: if all you actually need for the two weeks is the daily refresh with no query changes, you don't need edit mode at all. The takeover already moved the refresh and connections to you, and you've confirmed it runs. The schedule will run under your credentials as is.

If that was helpful, please give a thumbs up and mark it as the accepted solution.

      Hi Shai,

      Thanks for your help.

When I hit the "Refresh Now" button for the Dataflow it fails and has a big, red X on the workspace view. Here's the error I'm getting:

I've connected to the Lakehouse using a new connection and that part seemed to work without issues. Do you know by any chance know what else I might be missing?

In regard to your point on not needing edit mode: We don't typically have refreshes automatically scheduled and do it on demand when the data is ready. Since we handle running the dataflow manually, I will need edit mode correct?

      Look forward to hearing back.

      Thanks!

        Hi JC_24 ,

Since the new Lakehouse connection was created successfully, the connection and authentication appear to be working correctly. The refresh failure is therefore more likely related to the Dataflow refresh process itself, such as destination configuration or permissions used during refresh.

Regarding Edit mode, users do not need Edit permissions just to manually trigger a Dataflow refresh. According to Microsoft documentation, users should have the appropriate workspace role and access to the required connections.
