Ribbon Chart Total Labels

I have a ribbon chart showing the Total Labels above each column. When using slicers the Total Labels update as I would expect to show the filtered total. However, when i select within the ribbon chart the total label remains the same which is not what I would like. I cannot use a card visual as it's a daily refreshing chart that adds columns as it goes. I also cannot change the chart type. Is there a way to solve this?

Hi @AMitchell

Okay, gotcha. I see the challenge. Unfortunately, the ribbon chart does not natively allow you to adjust the value of the total as it is meant to add up the segments together. However, you can achieve a similar effect by stacking two visuals on top of each other (and then grouping it).

Here's a basic approach that would work:

  1. Switch to the stacked bar chart. Don't worry you, can always toggle the "ribbon" setting to make it look exactly like the ribbon chart.

Note: Stacked bar, not 100% stacked bar chart.
  2. Visual 1: Drop your segment in the Legend field. Format as needed.
  3. Visual 2:  Copy visual 1 and remove the column from the Legend field. This will convert the visual into a single column. You're then going to format and turn on data labels and/or total labels. Format all elements except your total number to be transparent.
  4. Next, click visual 1 and click FORMAT and click EDIT INTERACTIONS. Instead of it highlighting, select FILTER on visual 2. This will ensure that your bar does not move.
  5. Final step is to overlay one over the other.

Can you share a screenshot of what you mean by "select within the ribbon chart"?

If I select a segment within this then the total label stays the same. If I select the same segment using a slicer the total updates
