Retirement of Excel Organization Data Types and Featured Tables? is it true?

Hi everyone,

I came across this article stating that Excel’s Organization Data Types will be retired on July 31, 2025, and that Featured Tables from Power BI might stop working as well.

I couldn’t find any confirmation of this on official Microsoft documentation (e.g., Learn, Microsoft 365 roadmap, or lifecycle notices). Could someone from Microsoft or the community clarify the following:

  1. Are Organization Data Types in Excel being retired? If so, what is the official retirement date?

  2. Will Featured Tables (Power BI data types in Excel) be affected by this change? Or will they continue to work as usual?

  3. Is there an official Microsoft source (e.g., roadmap item, admin center message, support doc) that confirms these changes?

The confusion is understandable, but the key difference is in how the two features are surfaced in Excel. Organization Data Types use the “Data Types -> Organization” card,  this UI layer is being retired. Featured Tables, however, work through the “Get Data -> From Power BI” path and are simply treated as structured data types once imported. So even though both connect Excel to Power BI, they rely on different underlying mechanisms.

 

In short, Organization Data Types are tied to a specific user-facing integration that’s being deprecated, while Featured Tables are just metadata-enabled Power BI tables that Excel still supports through standard Power BI connectors. That’s why Featured Tables will continue to function normally.

 

You're right that Microsoft hasn’t published this clearly in public-facing docs, but the retirement is confirmed in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Message ID MC1072405, which only references Organization Data Types, not Featured Tables.

Featured tables are a way to link your data in Microsoft Excel to data from Power BI. I dont understand if featured table will continue working why Org data type will not. I still didnt find any official communication from Microsoft.

Yes, the retirement of Excel’s Organization Data Types has been confirmed by Microsoft. These data types will be retired on July 31, 2025. Microsoft recommends switching to alternatives like “Get Data > From Power BI” or using custom add-ins. This change applies specifically to the Organization Data Types feature powered by Power BI datasets.

 

No, this retirement does not affect Featured Tables from Power BI. Featured Tables, used to define structured data types in Excel based on tables marked in Power BI datasets remain supported and functional.

  2. No, there’s no indication that Featured Tables (the Power BI–backed data types accessible via Excel) are being retired. The official changes refer only to the built-in “Organization” data types, not the Power BI–powered featured tables.
    1. The retirement notice explicitly suggests using Data → Get Data → From Power BI, or building a custom add-in, as a replacement
    2. No roadmap, Admin Message Center, or Microsoft Learn entry indicates that Excel’s Power BI–based featured-table integration will be retired.
