I have a tricky situation. Ex-colleague originally published a report with an independent dataset by importing the tables from SQL Server. After building other reports with similar data requirements, I developed a central dataset that can be shared across all of these reports.
My issue is that I would like to publish a new version of the standalone report with one using the central dataset-including the report GUID, subscriptions, etc. Basically, I do not want my users to know anything changed, have to update bookmarks, etc. Currently, when I try to change Source (Transform Data >> Data source settings >> Data sources in current file), I only see original SQL Server and when I click on 'Change Source...' button, the only option is SQL Server dabase.
I would like to change source to Power BI dataset published to service which has same table structure.
Is this possible?

Hi , @giramswa
According to your description, you want to change the datasoure from sql server to datset in Power BI Service. You need to make sure that the data structure is the fully same between two datasouces.
We can delete the sql server query in Power BI Query Editor and we do not delete the visual in report page:
After deleteing the previous data soucre ,we can cilck "Apply" to apply the operation to Desktop, then we can connect the dataset in Power BI Service in Power BI Desktop:
Then load the data in it.
Thank you for your time and sharing, and thank you for your support and understanding of PowerBI!

Hi, @giramswa
According to your description, are you trying to replace the data source of the dataset?
For the data source of the changed dataset, the first is to use parameters, and the second is to download the .pbix file, modify it, and then redistribute it.
For the second way, you can modify the server and database of the corresponding SQL Server, and then connect to the new data source, and if the data structure is the same, there will be no problem.
However, if the data source is connected to SQL Server, you can only modify the server name and database of the corresponding SQL Server in the interface.
If you want to switch other types of data sources, you may need to delete the previous query in Power Query and then connect your new data source. And for this , you do not delete the visual in the report page, just update the data source in Power Query.
Thank you for your time and sharing, and thank you for your support and understanding of PowerBI!

Hi Aniya,
Thank you for replying my post.
Currently my report is using data which is imported from SQL Server.
I want this report to stop using this data and instead start using data from a live Power BI dataset created in the Power BI service. Is that possible? If yes, how to do it?
Thanks,
Swapnil G
