Hi folks,
can a desktop file (.pbix) be:
* refreshed
* published
automatically?
I understand that PBI desktop is used to do just this and I am aware of the scheduled refresh capability within the PBI Service, however, since we (our org), has yet to configure a data gateway, I was wondering if the above can be accomplished? (without having to open the (pbix) file, manually refresh and then publish) ... perhaps via powershell etc
TIA john

Hi @Anonymous
Thanks for reaching out to us.
>> without having to open the (pbix) file, manually refresh and then publish
Usually, we just need to set the refresh plan on the Power BI Service or manually refresh to complete the refresh of the dataset.
Please confirm the refresh type according to this article, Data refresh in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Docs
Then decide if you need to use datagateway. On-premises data gateway - Power BI | Microsoft Docs
Configure scheduled refresh
Configure scheduled refresh - Power BI | Microsoft Docs
Refresh now (manually refresh the dataset on Service)

@Anonymous Power Shell/Power bi cmdlets also work for power bi service.

Hi Amit,
unfortunately one-drive is not relevant. My source is AZ SQLDB. So I'm wanting to refresh the contents of the (pbix) file, publish and overwrite the PBI dataset ... all without opening the (pbix) file via PBI desktop.
So can the data be refreshed (in the background) without ever having to open the (pbix) file?
Rgds
