Refresh cant be scheduled data set doesn't contain data model

Hi Everyone,

I have a requirement to create a Power BI dataset in online. Source file is CSV, I am successfully able to create dataset but unfortunately Its not supporting to add schedule refresh to it.

It throws an error as "Refresh can't be scheduled because the data set doesn't contain any data model connections, or is a worksheet or linked table. To schedule refresh, the data must be loaded into the data model."

can anyone help me how to resolve this ?

thanks

Hi @Anonymous ,

As @AllisonKennedy  suggested, you can store your CSV file in OneDrive or SharePoint so that Power BI will automatically connect to the file and refresh any changes with the dataset in Power BI. You can review the document below to get more details. However, based on your previous reply it seems that this method is not supported on your end.

Refresh a dataset created from a .CSV file on OneDrive or SharePoint Online
As mentioned in the error message, since this is a worksheet and not loaded into the model, there is no way to configure a scheduled refresh... You can try to connect the CSV file in Power BI Desktop, then transform data to generate the model, and to create the report. After that, you can publish the report to Power BI Service.

Since the CSV file is on-premise, you need to install and configure a gateway first. Please note that keep the gateway online. Then add the source to the gateway and configure the schedule refresh. You can refer the following documentations.

The Power BI Gateway; All You Need to Know

Configure scheduled refresh

Install and register gatewayInstall and register gateway

Add gateway data sourceAdd gateway data source

Configure schedule refreshConfigure schedule refresh

@Anonymous Are you using Power BI desktop to create the dataset or are you working with Dataflows? Is the CSV file saved in SharePoint?

Thanks for your reply,

I am importing the CSV files from my machine saved in system. Creating datasets directly in Power BI service. But issue with adding schedule refresh to it .

@Anonymous  You'll need to save the CSV file in SharePoint so you can schedule refresh without a gateway.

Thanks for the response @AllisonKennedy .
Yes it works with sharepoint,as per our requirement we are not supposed to use sharepoint/one drive as a data source. It has to work with flat files in network drive.

@Anonymous  In that case you will need a Gateway.
